The Montessori Method
What is Montessori?
Founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, this method is defined as, "a system of education that seeks to develop natural interests and activities rather than use formal teaching methods."
In other words, Montessori is a unique teaching method which uses self-directed activity, hands-on learning, and collaboration. Children are given age-appropriate activities and make their own creative choices in learning.
Curriculum
Beach Montessori Christian Academy uses the Montessori Method to meet children's academic needs and biblical principles to meet children's spiritual needs and encourage civic duties. We also use STREAMin3 as a curriculum. This curriculum model was developed by researchers at the University of Virginia. In STREAMin3 curriculum, kids think big, solve problems, and explore their world. This sets them up for success in kindergarten and beyond.
We believe that children should move at their own pace while going through the developmental process. We use a multi-aged classroom structure because we believe that interaction between age groups encourages sharing and mutual respect.
Goals
Our program goals are designed to enable children to develop spiritually, academically, physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and creatively.
At Beach Montessori, we want children to:
- Grow in faith and develop a positive self-worth
- Grow in independence
- Develop self-control and self-discipline
- Gain control of and understand their own bodies
